With a B.S. in Design and a minor in Pottery from The State University of New York at Buffalo, I started my career in Dallas, Texas working as the Art Director for a small advertising agency. After moving to Florida in the late 80’s I transferred my love for design to making jewelry and selling it at art festivals around Florida and the east coast. In 2004, an opportunity arose to start back with pottery by teaching adult wheel classes at a local pottery studio. Having learned how to throw on the potter’s wheel in high school and continuing in college, returning to this medium was like finding an old friend.
Most of my work is wheel thrown but I do some hand building as well, sometimes combining the two techniques. By using carving and sgraffito techniques on the surface, I can add my love of drawing and create pieces that are truly unique.
Recently, I have added fused glass to my fired arts. Exploring this medium has been like opening a brand new box of crayons with the gorgeous color palette. So many possibilities! Gail Artin
